Beaufort Historic Site North Carolina Wedding

Beaufort, North Carolina, is a majestic fishing town set on the crystal blue waters of the Atlantic. This historic and humble coastal location was idyllic for Laura and Josh’s wedding day. With a Carolina blue sky above and the rippling white caps below, this couple celebrated with an homage to the past all while looking towards the future.

Everything about this wedding was bright, starting with the bride’s accessories. Laura wore white peep toe slingbacks with a criss-cross design and accessorized with small pearl stud earrings.

Her gorgeous head of red hair definitely stole the show and was styled half-up and curled. She wore a strapless lace sweetheart dress with a delicate strand of pearls- a classic Southern touch. Her bridesmaids wore long Tiffany blue dresses, some V-neck and some strapless. The group of ladies stood next to the waterfront for a few shots, with a healthy generous breeze.

Josh was the epitome of handsome. He donned a gray three-piece suit with a blush-colored tie. For an adorable touch, his boutonniere was made from a tiny bloom of cotton.

Beaufort is known for its beloved double-decker bus tours and Laura and Josh used the characteristic transportation to make their way to the ceremony. Looking cool in their sunglasses, Josh and his groomsmen climbed atop the red double-decker. Each guy had on a gray tie and a suit that matched the groom’s

Laura boarded a bus of her own and looked delicate and angelic in the middle of its gray and orange interior.

With her best girls in tow, they, too, were off to the courthouse.

The simple splendor of the ceremony space was peaceful with an air of gentility.

Guests were seated at long white-washed benches. The historic Beaufort courthouse, painted a brick red, was decorated with a wreath on the door and garland on the stair rails.

Laura was escorted down the aisle by her father and greeted Josh as the courthouse steps. In a heartfelt ceremony in front of friends and family, these two said “I do.”

The bridal party posed for incredible group shots at some other historic properties in Beaufort, as they are plentiful and charming.

With a wide porch and blanched exterior, Laura and Josh looked picture perfect in their first photos as husband and wife.

The reception was a personalized affair held under a white tent. Guests were invited to sign a photo album when they entered. Round reception tables were dressed with white linens, white chargers and Tiffany blue napkins. Centerpieces included silver lanterns, pink carnations, eucalyptus and gold mirror glass votives.

The cake looked delicious and exceptional in a monochromatic style. It was a white four-tier creation with thin swirls of buttercream about the layers. The topper was a small collection of pink roses and the cake was housed on a white stand.

Laura and Josh enjoyed their first dance as husband and wife with their bridal party by their sides. The entire group danced and celebrated as the day turned into night, trading sunlight for streetlights.

The couple was given one last ‘hoorah’ with a celebratory sparkler exit.

As they brought their wedding day to a close, they couldn’t help but get one last shot on the storied streets of Beaufort.

Laura and Josh took the notion of a courthouse wedding to a new, beautiful level and it couldn’t have been lovelier. The town of Beaufort is drenched in history and now, these two have their own beloved memories to recount and recollect. Congratulations, Laura and Josh!

Sunday Ramble & Sneak Peek.

This week I had the chance to go into Harry Potter super fan geek mode as we headed off to the studio tour. It was brilliant, it isn’t far from where we live so was a super simple journey and we had a lovely day. A was in his element and it was so magical. We took lots of snaps but I wouldn’t want to ruin the mystery by sharing them with you, so here is me in Diagon Alley and tasting butter beer 🙂

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

We also got back from Ikea with lots of frames and shelves that we put up this week. It’s lovely to make our house feel more like a home by getting some treasured images on the walls. I have been desperately crocheting in the hope that I will complete my blanket for baby finally. It’s going to be touch and go for sure though.

Ohhh and I got new specs!!! I have had my current frames for a good couple of years and haven’t found any I preferred to replace them. Well I had an appointment this week and G convinced me to take the plunge and get some new frames. I am not sure I feel too confident in them yet, it’s a big deal changing glasses when you wear them 99% of the time. But hopefully they look nice and it was a good decision. It’s nice to see a bit better anyway hehe.

Hopefully next week I can squeeze in a hair cut as I am not sure I will have much me time in the coming months. Otherwise it’s a busy week blogging and hopefully spending some quality time with A.

For now though, let me share a peek of tomorrow…

Bright Beautiful Spring Wedding

Beautiful Snow-Capped Spring Wedding in Colorado

Laura and Finn married in a sweet and unique wedding in the beautiful ski resort town of Vail, Colorado.

And it was gorgeous.

A stylish couple who carved their own day exactly how they wanted it, they tossed out tradition and had a beautiful wedding filled with personal touches – all captured by the wonderful Selah Photography (whose black and white shots are just stunning!).

A chilly al fresco ceremony was made all the warmer with sweet words, and sweeter hot chocolate.

Then on to a reception with giant blooms, an abundance of candles, and chic vintage furniture, for a night of dancing to great music and chowing down on some of the couple’s favourite food.

All set against the backdrop of some of Colorado’s prettiest peaks, see out ski season in style with these beautiful mountain nuptials.

The Theme

Much of our inspiration for theme and décor came from our location – we wanted the décor and style to fit with the casual yet elegant style of Vail itself.

I found my dress early in our planning process and I do feel like it helped to set the tone for the wedding, even though Finn didn’t see it until I was walking down the aisle!

Gretchen with Chairished Vintage was great to work with, as her vintage style fit in perfectly with our vision.

The Flowers

Our bouquets were made of ranunculus, Juliet garden roses, lilac, spray roses, tulips and eucalyptus.

The Attire

Dress shopping was by far my favorite part of wedding planning!  I found my dress with my mom and sisters within a month of being engaged at a great bridal shop in Denver called Emma and Grace.  My dress was a shade of blush rather than white, which I loved.

I thought dark navy complemented my dress well, so this is the color I chose for my bridesmaids and then incorporated different shades of light pink and blush into their bouquets.  I wanted them all to have the freedom to choose a dress style that they liked for their body type, especially because one of my bridesmaids was 36 weeks pregnant, and another had just delivered a baby one month prior, so I found a fabric and color at J. Crew that I liked and then let them choose any style in that fabric.

We had no idea what the weather would be like in April in Vail, and the ceremony was outdoors, so I found these cute faux fur shawls on Etsy for my bridesmaids to wear which worked out perfectly.  I wore an ivory faux fur shawl during the ceremony and when we were outside for photos, but walked down the aisle without it so I wasn’t hiding my dress.

Finn’s tuxedo was a dark navy.  For our groomsmen, we wanted to avoid the traditional black rental tux.  Finn found a great company online called Indochino that makes custom menswear.  Each of the groomsmen sent in their measurements and had a grey suit custom made for them. We were very happy with the final look and the groomsmen were happy to have a nice suit that they could wear again.

The Ceremony

Finn and I wrote our own vows and didn’t show them to each other in advance.

As part of his vows, he read the poem “Love” by Roy Croft, which was absolutely perfect. Our goal was to keep the ceremony fairly short but meaningful – which I felt like we did.

The Photography

We loved working with Jackie with Selah Photography, as well as her husband Matt, who serves as her axillary shooter.

We had wanted a photographer with an artistic, photojournalistic style who was comfortable with more candid shots rather than going through a checklist of posed photos, as we wanted our photos to capture the feelings of the day.

We were incredibly happy with the photos in the end.

Favourite Moments

We held our weekend in Vail on closing weekend, which was meaningful to us.  Finn owns a hotel in Vail that he has been managing for the past 6 years where we have spent a lot of time during our five year relationship.

He has been working on a plan to tear the lodge down and redevelop, which came into fruition this year, so this was his last season running the lodge.  Thus, in addition to closing weekend of Vail, it was also closing weekend of his lodge, which was a symbolic close of a chapter and the start of a new one.

The wedding reception was held just a few blocks from his lodge and several of our out of town guests were able to stay there, which was fun.

The Decor & Details

We decorated with flowers – real as well as oversized paper flowers, vintage furniture, and candles.

My parents put together a s’mores bar which we set up right outside the reception venue that was a lot of fun – and encouraged guests to go outside.

One of Finn’s brothers set up a TV screen behind one of the bars that streamed photos throughout the night.  In addition to photos of us together and through the years, if the guests used the hashtag #vowsinvail, the photos showed up on the screen in real time.

The Refreshments

We served hot chocolate with white and pink heart-shaped marshmallows to our guests upon arrival to the ceremony, which was a big hit.

Our main goal for our reception was for our guests (and us!) to have fun.  We wanted to encourage our guests to dance and to be up mingling with other guests so we chose not to have formal tables with assigned seating.  Instead, we informal seating – several vintage couches and chairs, two large farm tables, standing cocktail tables, and round tables scattered throughout the reception venue.

We felt like this worked perfectly – the dance floor was never empty and several of our friends ended up making new friends that they otherwise may not have talked with.  Even though there were more guests than chairs, I don’t remember ever looking around and seeing a shortage of places to sit.

The food was catered by one of our favorite restaurants in Vail, The Left Bank.  We love the lobster rolls they sell at the Vail farmer’s market during the summer so these were a must.

All of the food was easy to eat standing up since we didn’t have formal seating – in addition to the lobster rolls, we had a great selection of cheeses and meats, mini quiches and BLT sandwiches, poached salmon on toast, roasted vegetable skewers, lettuce wraps with seasonal vegetables, shrimp salad in lettuce cups, etc.

Late in the night, we brought out trays of Croque Monsieurs, which were a huge hit. The Left Bank is a French restaurant, which was also special to us, as we were engaged in Paris.

The Music

We had a guitarist play at our ceremony.  The wedding party walked down to the song Blackbird by the Beatles, I walked down the aisle to Canon in D, and Finn and I walked out to The Wedding March.

Finn and I danced to an acoustic version of the song We Found Love which our band learned for us.

One of the highlights of the night was when my parents surprised us with a dance they had prepared that included a mix of various songs – from The Twist to Gangnam Style.

The photos that Jackie and Matt captured of our expressions watching them were some of my favorites.

We love dancing so we chose a great band who could play music that we liked (and specifically avoid certain songs we don’t) and we started the dancing as soon as we could by starting the speeches (which we limited to the maids of honor and best man and my father – anyone else who wanted to say something did it at the rehearsal dinner, which worked really well) immediately upon our arrival, followed by dancing.

We also hired a DJ to play music during the band’s breaks and when the band was done playing to keep the energy up the entire night.

Advice for Other Couples

I think my best advice for other couples planning a wedding would be to not get caught up trying to do things the way “everyone else” does them.  One of the reasons I think we were so happy with our ceremony and reception was that we didn’t do anything that wasn’t meaningful to us.

We started our planning by thinking of what we did and did not like about weddings we’d been to.  We don’t like long boring ceremonies so we kept ours short and sweet but still significant based on what we did choose to include.  We didn’t find meaning in traditions such as the bouquet and garter tosses, neither of us really like cake, and we don’t like it when you get to the reception and are starving and waiting to eat – so we left some things out, didn’t serve cake, and had food readily available before we even got there so people could start eating right away if they were hungry.

In order to stay within a budget, Finn researched every detail of the wedding as much as possible and got price quotes from multiple vendors before making a decision.  He spent an incredible amount of time doing this – I couldn’t have done it without him.

Vail is an expensive place to get married but we were able to save money by holding the wedding closing weekend, as rates at the end of the season for hotels tend to be lower than in peak season.  This way we also avoided peak wedding season, which helped us when looking for vendors, as most people we checked with were available that weekend so we had more options of people to work with.

We were not, however, willing to save money by doing everything ourselves during wedding weekend – we didn’t want to be decorating, cleaning up, etc., and wanted to avoid having to ask friends and family to help with these sorts of things as well.

We were very happy to have hired Chairished Vintage and Candlelight Ambiance to take care of decorations and tear down at the rehearsal dinner and wedding reception.

Beautiful Colorado Wedding | Selah Photography | Wedding Blog 36

Isn’t it just gorgeous – you know how much we love giant flowers. So many pretty details, and Vail looks like such a beautiful town. And we just can’t get enough of hearing a bride praise her groom for getting so involved in the wedding planning.

Circus Themed Shavehead Lake Michigan Wedding

Canadian actress Nina Dobrev once said “Even though you’re growing up, you should never stop having fun.” For Brittany and Cory, the fun is just beginning. They promised forever in a gorgeous outdoor wedding, where their quirky, youthful demeanors were on full display with delightful DIY touches and nods to their love of music.

Brittany wore a practical and perfect empire waist gown, with a ruched top and long lace-detailed skirt. She paired it with neutral colored wedges, a fingertip-length veil, large pearl earrings and a pearl statement necklace. She carried a bouquet with explosions of orange, purple and gold.

Her bridesmaids wore short golden yellow gowns in various shades and styles, as well as sassy fuchsia heels. They also carried smaller versions of the bride’s bouquet.

Cory looked charming in a khaki-colored vest, white shirt and pink bowtie. A fun trick was having all the groomsmen sport different bowties and boutonnieres, which were all tiny pinwheels in fun colors and patterns.

This gave each gentleman a different appearance with a similar, coordinating detail.

Brittany and Cory opted for a first-look moment before the ceremony. Surprising each other near the water, the two were equally elated to get married.

The Sterling Castle Shelby Alabama Real Wedding

There’s a quote that says “Once in a while, in the middle of an ordinary life, love gives us a fairytale.” That fairytale couldn’t have been written for a more perfect pair than Reginna and William. This princess truly met and fell in love with her prince and the Sterling Castle in Alabama was the perfect venue to solidify this couple’s storybook romance.

alabama wedding

Reginna looked like the perfect princess bride. She blew everyone away in a tulle ballgown with dramatic skirt. The sweetheart neckline and fitted bodice was encrusted with generous beading. She completed her bridal look with a gorgeous fingertip-length veil that sparkled in the sunlight. Since purple is symbolic of royalty, Reginna also carried a bouquet of lavender-colored roses and incorporated the color throughout the rest of the wedding details.

Reginna’s bridesmaids looked incredibly sophisticated with long purple chiffon dresses. Each lady wore a different style, some with one-shoulder designs and others with sleeves. They accessorized with silver jewelry and carried petite versions of the bride’s bouquet.

alabama wedding

William and his seven groomsmen wore dark gray tuxedos with white ties and vests. Their delicate purple rose boutonnieres offered a small, subtle touch of color. This dashing group looked handsome and coordinated.

Guests were met with a sign directing them towards the festivities of the day.

he ceremony included two adorable ring bearers wearing gray vests, pants and tall argyle socks.

And finally, Reginna was escorted down the stone steps towards a flower-framed aisle. She met William underneath a decorated arbor with a chic chandelier hanging behind them.

After they sealed their vows with a tender kiss, the new “Mr. and Mrs.” stole a few intimate moments to capture some photos on the castle grounds. They looked poised and perfect in front of a blooming white tree.

The reception was held under a white tent that featured a wrought-iron chandelier and white fabric draping on the ceiling and walls. Reception tables lined the perimeter of the gorgeous dance floor. The castle even had knights guarding the sweetheart table! The area also featured Edison lights strung across the ceiling for a soft, romantic glow.

Each table featured silver chivari chairs, an iridescent gray table cloth, a white candelabra and small assortments of flowers and votives.

The cake was a colorful masterpiece. It featured four tiers of lavender-colored fondant with a cascade of large white gardenias down the front. A glittering “B” topped the cake, while a dazzling base held it.

The couple dined on delicious comfort food, danced the night away, and before long, exited the castle in a shower of purple light.

Upon their departure, Reginna and William were feted with a dynamic fireworks display. It doesn’t get much grander than that.

Reginna and William’s fairytale became a reality the day they said “I do” at the Sterling Castle. Their wedding day was magic and the only thing left for them to do is live happily ever after. Best wishes, Reginna and William!

Frazier History Museum Kentucky Real Wedding

For eccentric couple, Haley and Drew, a wedding day meant more than just a ceremony and reception. They wanted to have a weekend experience for their guests, complete with a barbeque, museum tours, and the most breathtaking Gatsby-inspired wedding one can imagine. With a knack for DIY touches and a hearty love for the Beatles, Haley and Drew relied on their loved ones and a creative spirit to actualize the ambiance for their wedding and the final result was every bit as breathtaking, classic and modern, as they had hoped.

kentucky wedding

Having lived in Chicago for a few years, the couple wanted to bring the city back to their beloved Louisville, Kentucky. They found the Frazier History Museum online and knew instantly it was the perfect place to say “I do.” Guests stayed at the Seelbach Hotel, which is rich in bold colors, tapestries and lots of gold. Gatsby would adore it.

Haley’s bridal look fit every aspect of her wedding day. She wore gold statement jewelry, beautiful blue heels with stunning embellishments and an eye-catching lace gown. It featured a sweetheart neckline, a long train, a gorgeous highlight at the top and a dramatic keyhole back. She got ready with her dear friends and family and made her way downstairs to greet Drew for a first-look moment.

The perfectly planned first look had Drew waiting at the bottom of the grand staircase in the Seelbach. Incredibly dapper, Drew was dressed in a sharp black tuxedo with black bowtie. With his back turned, Haley made her way down the stairs. As he turned around, his face was priceless at the sight of his bride.

The photographer captured this, as well as a gorgeous group shot, before the ceremony.

The ceremony space was decorated with arrangements of purple flowers as guests were seated on both sides of the aisle. A cute ring bearer and darling flower girl preceded Haley down the aisle. With a slight breeze, Haley made her way to Drew on the rooftop location. In a loving ceremony with gray-suited groomsmen to the right and black-dressed bridesmaids on the left, Haley and Drew said “I do.” Every song in the ceremony had special meaning and each one was one of the Beatles’ classic hits.

After the ceremony, the couple paused for more photos, showing off the gorgeous flowers that were incorporated into the space. Haley’s bouquet was the most beautiful collection of purple buds: from purple roses to violets. And the regal hue color didn’t stop there, as the couple also incorporated it into the reception.

Upon entering the venue, one’s eyes feasted on the purple uplighting soaking the walls and ceiling. Large lanterns were hung from the ceiling and a long white table sat to the side, with round tables placed about the room for guests to find their seats.

The room was decorated with small arrangements of white flowers and large arrangements with tall branches, dangling crystal beading, and candle votives. Romantic candlelight was dripping everywhere.

The cake was charming and sophisticated. An all-white creation, it featured white rosettes on all three layers. It was simple, understated elegance at its very best.

The couple received toasts from friends and family and enjoyed dancing to all kinds of songs: from Motown, to disco, to pop. There was a little something for everyone at the reception, making it a fun-loving time for all.

Haley and Drew’s wedding experience was a mix of enduring beauty and refreshing fun. Borrowing from things they both share a love for, they were able to design a personalized day that was still as timeless as their love story. It’s just like the Beatles said “all you need is love.” Congratulations, Haley and Drew!
