DIY God’s Eye

Today we wanted to share a tutorial for the beautiful God’s eyes we made on our FP Me Camping trip! God’s eyes, or Ojo de Dios, are spiritual weavings consisting of yarn and sticks, and making them is thought to be a meditative practice. Though their meanings vary from culture to culture, they are commonly thought to be symbolic of the spiritual eye, or power of seeing and understanding the unknown. Their four points represent the four elements earth, water, air, and fire, with the eye at the center. Making them is a wonderful way to get your creativity flowing, and they can be as simple or as complex as you desire!

What you need:
2 Sticks
Yarn, string, ribbon
Embellishments of your choosing (we used shells, pom poms, tassels, and beads)
Scissors

Cross your sticks and tie a knot to secure the sticks together. Wrap the yarn around the sticks in a “x” pattern a couple of times to make sure they are held together well.

Working clockwise, start to form the diamond pattern by wrapping the yarn under and around one stick, then under and around the next, and so on.

Keep on going until you are ready to move onto your next color yarn.

Tie a knot to the next color you would like to incorporate making sure the knot it ties in the back of the hanging so it won’t be visible.

Continue on with your pattern until you’re happy with how your God’s eye looks!

When you are finished wrapping the yarn, add embellishments by tying or gluing them on.

And voila! A beautiful addition to your home or a wonderful personalized gift.
